http://www.cydt.org.uk/studio2.jpgIT IS widely recognised that many disadvantaged and disaffected young people can be engaged through music. So it has long been an aspiration of the the Trust to establish a music workshop where young people could both try out and enhance their skills.  This would also provide opportunities for other activities in accordance with the social educational aims of the Trust.

The Trust's determination to pursue such a project was reinforced by experience with the former Beat the Street project which soon discovered that for some young people the opportunity to explore the wide ranging aspects of the music industry served to whet their appetite for learning.   So a pilot music project was launched in collaboration with lncredible Music at Tooting. Pupils were offered a 12 week taster course providing an insight into the music industry. Sound engineering, singing, rapping and character building exercises were included as a stepping stone to further opportunities in the music industry or other education/training.  It soon became clear that there was a need for a more local facility.

So funds were raised and early in 2003 the Studio was launched to:

  • Provide a workshop-type facility where young people could meet to pursue their interest in music Introduce the varying aspects of the music industry to selected young people
  • Augment the work of other projects in providing on-site and in-house opportunities for the young people with whom they are working
  • Provide instruction and tuition in singing, playing instruments and writing music and lyrics Offer the opportunity to perform to a live audience
  • Provide a conduit whereby young people could demonstrate their musical talent to the professional market-place
  • Provide an over-arching opportunity for new experiences and a programme of social educational activities..

This popular project is now led by Jay Stephenson assisted by Daniel Thompson and Darnell Arnold. Contact Jay on 020 8683 7255, E-mail: jay.stephenson@cydt.org.uk
